About Devil’s Punchbowl Natural Area and Nature Center

The Devil's Punchbowl is a deep canyon in Valyermo, carved by large amounts of runoff coming down from the higher San Gabriel Mountains. The county counts 1,310 acres here. Layers of sedimentary rock have been tilted up into steep formations, and the surrounding landscape mixes Joshua trees, California junipers, pinyon pine woodland, and desert chaparral.

A 7.5-mile round-trip trail runs through the canyon for walkers, hikers, and horseback riders. The nature center covers native wildlife and the park's history, and there is also a museum, an amphitheater, an outdoor stage, animal exhibits, and picnic tables. Moonlight hikes, astronomy programs, a junior ranger program, bird walks, and animal presentations are among the scheduled programs.

The park is closed on Mondays. Restrooms are open 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the longer season, and from November 1 through February 28 staff are on site 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. while restrooms close at 4:30 p.m.
