About Teague Hill Open Space Preserve

Teague Hill Open Space Preserve lies in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Most of it has no public trails: the only way in is a short stretch of the Bay Area Ridge Trail (the Skyline Trail) that crosses the preserve's northwest corner, so Teague Hill works mainly as a link between San Mateo County's Wunderlich and Huddart parks and Midpen's El Corte de Madera Creek Preserve. The trailhead is on the south side of Kings Mountain Road about a quarter mile east of Skyline Boulevard, and there is no parking for the preserve itself.

The corner you walk through is a good example of oak and madrone woodland, and hikers may spot Kings Mountain manzanita, a rare plant found only on this mountain. The hillsides were heavily logged in the 1850s and 1860s: San Mateo County's first big mechanized sawmill operated in neighboring Bear Gulch from 1852, and in 1856 John G. Moore set up the county's first shingle mill in Tripp Gulch, now part of the preserve, later run by Woodside merchant and dentist Dr. Tripp. The hill is thought to be named for Andrew Teague, elected San Mateo County district attorney in 1869.

Hikers and horses are welcome on the trail; bikes and dogs are not. The preserve is open from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. Midpen preserves have no trash cans and most have no drinking water, so bring water and pack out what you carry in.
