About El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve

El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve covers about 2,900 acres of steep, forested canyons on the Skyline ridge, with more than 34 miles of multiuse trails. It is one of Midpen's most popular preserves for mountain biking, but hikers and riders use it too. The name means "cutting wood": from the 1860s, eight sawmills along its creeks supplied redwood lumber for growing San Francisco, and selective logging continued until 1988, shortly after the preserve was created. Old logging roads are now trails, the canyons have regrown dense second-growth redwoods, and a few old-growth giants remain, including one near the Timberview and Giant Salamander trails about 50 feet around at the base. Stumps along the ridge still show springboard notches.

On the Tafoni Trail, an observation deck looks at tafoni, honeycomb sandstone formations that take centuries to form; please do not climb them. A short detour on the Fir Trail leads to a vista point over the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Pacific. The Resolution Trail memorializes San Mateo County's deadliest plane crash, when a DC-6 hit a ridge here in fog in 1953, killing all 19 aboard. The Oljon Trail, opened in 2019, is a segment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail.

Dogs are not allowed. The main lot (65 spaces, with horse-trailer parking) is on the west side of Skyline Boulevard 2.7 miles north of Highway 84, and the Skeggs Point lot across the road serves the Tafoni Trail.
