About Leona Canyon Open Space Regional Preserve
Leona Canyon Open Space Regional Preserve protects a wooded canyon in Oakland, next to Merritt College. Restoration work along Rifle Range Creek, which runs beside the Leona Trail, is meant to reduce erosion and protect the streamside habitat. People and dogs are not allowed in the creek, and dogs that will not stay out of the water should be kept on leash.
In May 2022 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Army National Guard carried out a remedial action in the park; the work was completed in early June 2022.
The main way in is a staging area on Campus Drive, off Keller Avenue east of Interstate 580, where parking is free. You can also start from Merritt College, but the college lot charges a fee and is closed on weekends. The preserve has no developed facilities. It is used for hiking, running, biking, and dog walking.
