About Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline

Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline protects what remains of a once-extensive marshland on San Leandro Bay, right next to Oakland International Airport, on land leased from the Port of Oakland. Its centerpiece is the 50-acre Arrowhead Marsh, a Pacific Flyway stopover and part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network, reached by a boardwalk and an accessible observation platform. Doolittle Pond and Garretson Point, named for a Tribune reporter whose stories helped save the baylands, are good spots for watching birds and sunsets.

Paved trails run throughout the park for walking, cycling, and running, including a route along the San Leandro Creek channel from Hegenberger Road. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Grove, dedicated in 1993, stands at Doolittle Drive and Swan Way, and Roger Berry's sculpture "Duplex Cone" traces the sun's solstice paths. Off Doolittle Drive are picnic areas with barbecues, one of the District's largest turf playing fields, and a free two-lane boat launch; jet skis are banned November through March for nesting birds, and swimming is not allowed. The Tidewater Boating Center on the Oakland Estuary has an accessible paddle-craft dock on the San Francisco Bay Water Trail.

Dogs are not allowed in the marshes and must be leashed everywhere else. Parking is free except during major Coliseum events. From I-880, take Hegenberger Road west, then Doolittle Drive and Swan Way.
