About Big Break Regional Shoreline

Big Break Regional Shoreline in Oakley sits on the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta, where seawater meets Sierra snowmelt in the largest estuary on the Pacific coast. The name comes from a 1928 levee failure that flooded an asparagus farm and turned it into the small bay you see today. That mix of salt and fresh water supports about 70 bird species, including nesting black rails and white-tailed kites, wading herons and egrets, western pond turtles, and beavers, muskrats, and river otters along the sloughs.

The visitor center, opened in 2012 and certified for green building, is staffed by naturalists and sits next to the Delta Discovery Experience, a 1,200-square-foot walkable scale map that shows how water moves through the Delta. The park also has picnic meadows, a shaded amphitheater, a 100-foot fishing and observation pier, and a beach launch for kayaks and canoes about a quarter mile from the parking lot, part of the San Francisco Bay Water Trail. Anglers need a state license but no District permit; boaters offshore mostly catch largemouth and striped bass.

The paved, mostly flat Big Break Regional Trail runs along the south edge of the estuary for hikers, cyclists, and riders, and connects to the Marsh Creek and Delta de Anza regional trails toward Brentwood, Antioch, and Pittsburg. Summer visitors come for the cool Delta breezes. Gates open at 8 a.m. and close between 5 and 7 p.m. depending on the season.
