About Dockweiler State Beach

Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey has 3.7 miles of ocean frontage, with 288 acres of wide, sandy beach and more than 1,200 parking spaces in nearby lots. It is known for its fire rings, which make summer evenings busy as groups gather around them, and it sits directly under the Los Angeles International Airport flight path, so jet noise is part of the experience. Amenities include restrooms, showers, picnic facilities, and volleyball nets, and the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, the beach bike path, runs right alongside for cycling, skating, and jogging. Jetties at the north end are popular with anglers, and shore fishing is common.

The beach also has the Dockweiler RV Park, with more than 100 full-hookup and dry camper sites, and a youth center with a multipurpose room, terrace, and youth camps. Lifeguards are on duty during daylight hours.

The beach was called Moonstone Beach until the 1930s and was later known as Venice-Hyperion Beach State Park before being renamed in 1955 for Isidore B. Dockweiler, a prominent Los Angeles lawyer, Democratic Party figure, and president of the Los Angeles Public Library board. The state leases it to the City of Los Angeles, and the county's Department of Beaches and Harbors has operated it since 1976. Beach Cities Transit route 109 stops at Main Street and Imperial Avenue.
