About Ed R. Levin County Park
Ed R. Levin County Park in the Milpitas foothills is known for its hang-gliding launch area, where visitors can watch hang gliders and paragliders soaring overhead. Hiking, horseback riding, and picnicking are also popular, and the park has a playground and three lawns for kites and frisbee.
Sandy Wool Lake is stocked with fish from November through May; swimming is prohibited. A 20.6-mile trail system is open to hikers and equestrians. Sections of the Agua Caliente Trail and Calera Creek Trail are part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and are open to bicycles, and some East Bay Regional Park District trails connect to the park.
The southern part of the park, the Spring Valley Area, takes its name from the many springs that flow there. Its large pond is a kids-only fishing hole for ages 5 through 12, and the 18-hole Spring Valley Golf Course is nearby. The area also holds the Laguna Cemetery, a pioneer cemetery used from 1863 to 1912. After years of vandalism and neglect it has been restored, and a memorial at the gates tells about the people buried there.
The park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset, and trails open at sunrise. Vehicle entry fees are collected year-round, and fees also apply to group picnic areas and the youth campground. The Sandy Wool entrance on Old Calaveras Road and the Spring Valley entrance on Airpoint Trail, home to the park office, both have paid parking, restrooms, and hydration stations.
